Member Spotlight - Programs Committee & The Healthcare Symposium

The SMPS Atlanta Programs Committee develops, plans, and produces all luncheon programs. The committee carefully selects client panels and speakers to create programs that provide attendees with education and insight on topics relevant to the A/E/C industry and current market conditions. Each year, the Programs Committee members organize the MEGA Meeting, Healthcare Symposium, and at least three other networking/educational lunch programs that share their passion with the chapter on topics important to the A/E/C industry and its firms. Other than the MEGA Meeting, the Healthcare Symposium is the Programs Committee’s largest event. The Healthcare Symposium requires extensive planning and development. The event’s “champions,” who are volunteers from the Programs Committee, lead these efforts. Once the Programs Committee selects a topic for the Healthcare Symposium, the champions work through the details of the event. Some of their responsibilities include securing panelists and a moderator, developing the topic and questions, and working with the panelists and moderator to put together their headshots and bios. This year’s Healthcare Symposium took place in June and centered around the “State of Healthcare in Georgia, Where We Are and Where We’re Going.” Attendees gained insight on this topic from the President and CEO of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and three leaders in the healthcare industry from Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Caddis, and Piedmont Healthcare. The panel discussed the potential effects of the CON (Certification of Need) Program as well as what the future of healthcare holds for technology, challenges, and community involvement.

The Programs Committee offers its members the opportunity to develop event planning skills and strategies, connect with clients and partners, and collaborate with other marketing and business development professionals. "The best thing about being on the Programs Committee is being a critical part of a team that produces events with content geared toward clients. Not only are you keeping up to date with current market trends, you collaborate directly with the clients and speakers to produce valuable insights and create networking opportunities for our members." - Laura McDonald
