Member Spotlight: Beth Tucker

Beth is a marketing coordinator at Kimley-Horn, a full-service engineering, planning, and environmental consulting firm. She supports Kimley-Horn’s Southeast region, which covers Georgia (with three metro Atlanta offices in Midtown, Alpharetta, and Peachtree Corners), Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Beth began her marketing and business development career in 2012 as a proposal development consultant with ASI Government, a project management and acquisition consulting firm that exclusively supports federal clients in Washington, DC. After supporting the Chief Business Development Office for a year with proposal management for submittals to the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, General Services Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security, among many others, she moved over to ASI’s Knowledge and Learning division, which creates and maintains tools and literature for federal acquisition employees. In this role, Beth wrote, edited, and pushed-out via email daily news blasts, special topic pieces, and white papers to more than 25,000 federal employee subscribers.

But, Beth and her fiancé grew up and went to college in Georgia, so they soon longed to return to the Peach State. After four years in DC, Beth started her current role with Kimley-Horn’s Midtown Atlanta office in 2013. At Kimley-Horn, she supports both public and private sector project managers and clients. She is also one of the firm’s social media coordinators, helping to create a social presence and strategy for the firm’s multidisciplinary work. In addition, she coordinates and assists with local events and conferences. In her relatively short marketing career, Beth has supported proposals ranging from $5K to $1.5B, and even helped her former 300-person firm triumph over 12 other competitors for a spot on a hotly contested $495M IDIQ bid for the U.S. Army.

To learn the A/E/C marketing ropes, Beth began attending SMPS Atlanta events in the fall of 2013; she officially joined SMPS in June 2014 and now serves on the Education and Communications committees. Leveraging her love of and passion for social media, Beth manages SMPS Atlanta’s Twitter account.

Before joining the marketing ranks, Beth had a 10-year career as a nationally licensed pharmacy technician with CVS/Pharmacy in both Georgia and Northern Virginia. While working at CVS, Beth attended the University of Georgia, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English, as well as minors Comparative Literature and History, certification in British and Irish Studies, and an emphasis in Pre-Pharmacy studies. Beth is currently attending the University of Georgia to earn her Masters of Environmental Planning and Design degree, with a focus on urban planning and design.

She lives in Sugar Hill with her fiancé and their puppy Chewie, a shih-poo. In her free time, which is super rare these days, Beth enjoys reading, writing, cooking, and cupcaking (she also is a certified cake artist).

"I like to say that my marketing career is accidental—I didn’t even know what a bid submittal/proposal was when I was studying Modernist literature in college. So, I love that SMPS helps me better understand the A/E/C marketplace in ways that would otherwise take me years to learn just winging it. Also, I’m super busy (aren’t we all), so it is a way for me to commit to personal development—to do and learn the things that I probably would otherwise constantly put off for “when I have free time”—I register for an event, pay for it, and then I make sure it happens. I also am so appreciative for the vertical interaction and networking that SMPS and its events affords me—it’s always great to meet someone who has made a career out of this and who can share war stories, but it’s equally as awesome to help out someone who may not be as familiar with some software programs or other things."
