Every year SMPS Atlanta supports a cause to give back to our community. Past efforts have included planting trees for Trees Atlanta, Paying it Forward to struggling members and their families, and, most recently, sending care packages to troops overseas. SMPS Atlanta sent care packages to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Gulf Region Division (GRD), headquartered in Baghdad, and located throughout Iraq. Our chapter collected items at each lunch program to ship in care packages to show our support and appreciation of this important group of construction professionals who have been left out of mainstream “support the troops” efforts.
The GRD is comprised of Civilians, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Contractors. The GRD provides quality and sustainable engineering in support of civil/military construction in Iraq. These projects include hospitals, medical clinics, water treatment facilities, schools, and military installations. The GRD is comprised of a small group of about 250 brave souls and are spread out across Iraq, from resident offices in Baghdad to the Kurdish region in the north.
